Massingham Historical Society

The society was formed on 30 Nov 1997 and has more than 25 members who enjoy meetings, visits and researching.**    We have dedicated ourselves to record the past of both Great & Little Massingham for future generations.

Many acquisitions have been donated and acquired, from maps and property deeds to photographs and videos. Much research has been done in libraries, and much more is still to be done. Several members are recording memories of Massingham from our older residents.

A recent addition to the society is the work of Sister Laurence from St.Mary's Convent (now closed) who has kindly donated the historical records from the RAF's wartime years here.

Massingham Airfield played a vital role in the war effort and her work is a fitting tribute to the many hundreds of aircrew who never returned from missions over enemy territory. The collection of photographs and memorabilia, now known as the "Sister Laurence RAF Massingham Museum", was dedicated by ex BBC Sports Commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme during a visit to Great Massingham in August 2000. Kenneth was based here for a short period in 1940 flying Blenheim bombers. Two famous cricketers who also served here as pilots during the war years were Bill Edrich and Australian legend Keith Miller

Kenneth Wolstenholm of BBC Sports fame flew Blenheim Bombers from Massingham during WWII. He is  pictured with Sister Lawrence who has donated her collection of RAF records to the Historical society

Sadly, Kenneth died in March 2002 but we have very fond memories of his visit to the village.
